Overview

Gardona launched as a micro-mobility startup in 2013, operating e-scooter rental fleets across 6 cities. By 2014, the ops team was managing 1,200 scooters using a patchwork of spreadsheets, SMS alerts, and separate vendor dashboards.

I was brought in as the sole designer to build both the customer-facing rental app and the internal fleet management dashboard — simultaneously, over 8 months.

The Two Audiences

The project had two distinct user groups with entirely different needs:

  • Renters — urban commuters who needed to find, unlock, and pay for a scooter in under 30 seconds
  • Ops Managers — Gardona staff monitoring battery levels, maintenance alerts, and redistribution logistics across multiple cities

Designing for both simultaneously meant maintaining separate design systems while ensuring shared data models stayed consistent across both surfaces.

Fleet dashboard wireframes and iteration

Before the dashboard, I was refreshing five browser tabs and a spreadsheet to get a picture of the fleet. Now I have everything in one place — and it actually makes sense.

Results

Within six months of launch, both products were in production and showing measurable impact:

  1. Average ride initiation time reduced from 90 seconds → 28 seconds
  2. Fleet utilisation rate improved by 31% due to smarter redistribution tooling
  3. Maintenance response time dropped by 44% through real-time alert routing
  4. Gardona expanded to 3 new cities within 12 months of launch
